Sleeping under the stars

What are the different possibilities?

All the rules of wilderness camping
People often confuse wilderness camping with bivouac camping, yet these are two very different practices.

The wild camper is neither on foot nor by bike, but rather in a van or camper van. They like to be close to civilization, and tend to stay several nights in the same place.
The bivouacur is often a hiker in love with the great outdoors, who sleeps under the stars or in a light tent. They stay only one night, and resume their excursions as soon as the sun rises.

IS WILD CAMPING LEGAL IN FRANCE?

Wild camping and bivouacs are authorized in France wherever they are not prohibited! But as you may imagine, for ecological, environmental or safety reasons, the law has set up a small panoply of restrictions. So before you're forced to leave, it's best to know the exact rules...

Tents may not be pitched:

- In woods, forests and parks designated as nature reserves, and on sites protected as part of the natural heritage.
- On roads, paths and public highways.
- On the seashore.
- Less than 200 meters from an access to clean drinking water.
- Less than 500 meters from a listed monument.
- On private roads and land, unless the owner agrees.

Be aware that if you pitch your tent in a prohibited area, you could be fined up to €1,500. A bit expensive for a night under the stars!

The best spots for wild bivouacs

Good news for hikers: bivouacs are often tolerated or authorized in national and regional nature parks, according to their own regulations. So it's best to check their websites first.

Some parks where you can pitch your tent:

- Parc naturel régional du Vercors
- Parc national du Mercantour
- Parc national des Écrins
- Parc national des Cévennes
- Parc national des Pyrénées
- Parc naturel régional des volcans d'Auvergne

The rules of the "good" wilderness camper

- Take local regulations into account.
- Avoid flood-prone areas, large open spaces and stay away from tall trees which can attract lightning in the event of a storm.
- Respect nature and take nothing from it.
- Leave no trace of your passage.
- Be quiet and unobtrusive.
- Only light a fire if it is permitted and especially not in times of drought.
- Arrive late and leave early.
