A legendary ride with captivating origins

The GR20, often referred to as "Europe's most difficult hiking trail", is much more than just a signposted path in Corsica. It's a true adventure, a challenge for hiking enthusiasts, and an unforgettable experience for anyone venturing onto its rocky paths. But did you know that this emblematic trail has its roots in an ambitious project from the 1970s?

Initially conceived by the Parc Naturel Régional de Corse, the GR20 was designed to promote ecotourism and connect isolated villages. Since then, the trail has become a dream for hikers from all over the world, attracting thousands of visitors every year in search of stunning scenery and physical challenges.

The route: North to South

The GR20 crosses Corsica from north to south, stretching over some 180 kilometers, with 16 official stages. Here's an overview of the route, divided into two distinct sections:

The North section - Constraint and majesty

The start of the GR20 is usually in Calenzana, a charming village in the north of the island of beauty. The first stages are renowned for their technical nature, alternating sharp ridges, sustained climbs and breathtaking panoramas. Hikers will pass the famous Brèche de Capitello and the Refugio d'Ascu before arriving at Vizzavona, the transition point between the two sections.

La section Sud - Gentle and authentic

From Vizzavona onwards, the southern stages become a little gentler, though still demanding. You'll pass through picturesque valleys and hanging villages such as Bavella and Conca, where the GR20 ends. The landscapes of the South offer an immersion in Corsican pastoral culture and a mix of lush forests and vast plateaus.

Hiking the GR20 in Corsica requires careful preparation. Take the time to organize your hiking itinerary and bivouac sites in the mountains of Corsica, and pack all-season hiking gear suited to the summits.

When to go?

The GR20 can be walked from May to October, but each period has its own particularities:

  • May - June: Snow can still cover the higher parts of the trail, adding extra difficulty but offering unique scenery.
  • July - August: High season. Weather conditions are generally favorable, but trails and refuges are busier.
  • September - October: Fewer hikers and still pleasant temperatures, although some days can be cool.

With or without guide: which option to choose?

The GR20 can be walked with or without a guide, depending on your preferences and experience.

  • With guide: Ideal for less experienced hikers, or for those wishing to make the most of local history and anecdotes. A guide will also ensure optimum safety on the more technical sections.
  • Unguided: Best suited to experienced, self-sufficient hikers accustomed to long distances and physical challenges. This allows you to manage your own schedule while navigating using the white and red markers.

It all depends on your comfort level and your desire to immerse yourself in the experience at your own pace.
